Agent 64 aims to be the GoldenEye HD sequel we never had

As players wait for a seemingly inevitable GoldenEye HD announcement, a PC game revealed last night may offer an alternative.

The new trailer for Agent 64: Spies Never Die was shown as part of the PC Gaming Show on Sunday, showing what appears to be an attempt at an accurate GoldenEye sequel, minus the Bond licence.

The trailer contains music that sounds very similar to the James Bond theme, includes a variety of guns that resemble those from GoldenEye, and has a similar polygonal art style to Rare‘s 1997 title.

The trailer even ends with a cartridge being inserted into a console that looks suspiciously like a Nintendo 64.

Other details that appear faithful to the N64 classic include the breathing sound when the player is hit, the addition of a facility-like toilet section, and even the way remote mines are thrown onto walls.

According to developer Replicant D6: “Agent 64: Spies Never Die is a retro FPS inspired by classic 90s console shooters.

“Explore new locales, accomplish varied objectives and fight against state-of-the-art 1997 enemy AI. Enter a world of espionage and action.”

The game will also include a detailed editing suite which allows players to make their own single-player campaigns and share them with other users.

Agent 64: Spies Never Die will be released later this year on PC, and a playable demo is currently available on Steam.

Meanwhile, GoldenEye 007’s elusive HD port appears to be inching closer to release, after achievements were discovered on Xbox servers earlier this month.

It was first spotted earlier this year that Rare developers were seemingly playing an Xbox version of the FPS, as their progress was being logged on tracker sites such as TrueAchivements.

Last year it was confirmed that Microsoft had to shelve an already completed remaster of the classic N64 game for the Xbox 360 back in 2007, following licensing issues and miscommunication between license holders and a young team who rushed ahead to create it.

A working build of GoldenEye 007’s cancelled Xbox 360 remaster was leaked onto file-sharing sites, allowing those with access to the files to play it via a modded console or PC emulator.

At the time, VGC reviewed the leaked GoldenEye Xbox build and called it “the greatest remaster you’ll likely never play”.
